Happy Chanukah from 5 and 6

This week, we spent a while discussing acculturation. We discussed first what culture included. Then, students gave examples of culture and then evaluated whether or not Jude (the protagonist in the novel) is acculturated yet. After much debate and a group project, the class decided she was in the process of acculturation, and she had a ways to go.

We studied Miketz from the perspective of Joseph’s experience as viceroy over Egypt. We researched different types of food preservation that allowed Joseph to successfully help Egypt survive a famine, like the grain silo pictured below and the fermentation of different foods.

In art class, the students continued to work on their clay Mexican “Tree of Life” candelabras, in collaboration with their social studies unit.
