The Keshet Experience - August 27-30

From Morah Beth:

We have had so much fun getting to know each other, reconnecting with old friends and making new ones.

We began the week with some free choice, allowing the children to become familiar with the room space, us, and each other. We then transitioned to our meeting space where we went through the calendar routine (in English and Hebrew), with Will as our Calendar Helper! The children learned about the different job's they will be responsible for as well as the classroom/bathroom rules. Please be sure to ask your children what they learned and see if they can tell you!

We use a Social Skills program called Open Circle. This program is designed to teach children how to communicate with adults and their peers, as well show to appropriately handle more challenging social situations. We started out the year by reading the book, "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" This book talks about the different ways to "fill a bucket" and what happens if you "dip into a bucket".  After hearing the story each child had the opportunity to choose a card with an action written on it. They then had to determine if it was a "bucket filling" or "bucket dipping" action. Ever since this lesson we have ALL been doing our very best to fill up each other's buckets! Ask your child to provide examples of bucket filling and bucket dipping!

We also spent some time looking through the math books. While K students explored colors, making sets, and matching, the 1st grade students reviewed some of the number skills from last year as well as number bonds.

All children have been assessed in Reading/Phonics. Beginning next week your child will come home with a book or an activity to help develop their skills. We have also begun our read-a-loud in class. Charlotte's Web is a favorite of mine and the children seem to really be enjoying the story! Ask your child what characters we have been introduced to so far!

We also had our first visit to the library today! Children checked out books to read (or for you to read to them). Books are dues back next Friday, unless you need more time with them.

From Morah Gila -

It has such a pleasure to welcome back students who were with us last year. I missed all of you over the summer! It also has been such a joy to meet our 6 wonderful new Keshet students. We have had a great start to the school year. The class is learning so quickly, playing so nicely together and generally enjoying our time together in school.

Our first week of Judaic studies and Hebrew language has been packed with loads of learning and fun! All of our students sang the Alef Bet song. We also began to learn the words to the famous Israeli songהשמשבעקבותלעולם. Here is a link to the original song https://youtu.be/Rc76y7ELPc0  ,  and here is the recent cover video by Omer Adam  https://youtu.be/Cmmlg6LcYjU  . You can find the lyrics here https://shironet.mako.co.il/artist?type=lyrics&lang=1&prfid=1012&wrkid=1992   .

The students either began to learn or reviewed numbers, colors, some action words, classroom items, weather and days of the week in Hebrew. Those who need to learn the Alef Bet worked on the letter Alef. All of the children have begun in their new workbooks, and they each had a chance to write their names in Hebrew. Everyone either heard simple stories in Hebrew or read books in Hebrew on their own, each at their own level.

We began our mornings with tefillah, focusing on the Shema. We also attended the first half of the whole school tefillah on Thursday. We began to learn about Shabbat, including a poem and stories, and, of course, blessings and songs during our Kabbalat Shabbat celebration.  A wonderful week was had by all!
