The Kesht Experience February 20-28

Students are dealing with many situations and feelings in all realms of their lives. There are school pressures as well as home pressures that our children are learning to deal with.  Our Open Circle program is designed to help guide children through some of these stresses with a variety of strategies. We are trying to encourage children to move away from egocentricity and to see themselves as part of a whole community, like being in the Keshet classroom. 

After successfully completing the "January Gratitude Calendar" and almost finishing the "February Kindness Calendar", students are receiving a new challenge for March. They will have a "Coping Strategies List" and on the back a place to record a strategy that was attempted each day. 

This can be used for anything from dropping a bowl of cereal to arguing with a parent to not getting a favorite snack.... the purpose is to expose students to a variety of ways to both recognize feelings/stresses and to deal with them effectively. 

Please ask your child about this new challenge... and encourage them to use the strategies provided as necessary. If they have their own strategy that works best for them, they should add it to the list and document when they used it.

Reading groups continued with learning about a variety of influential black men and women in honor of Black History Month. Ask your child to tell you about Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and  Barack Obama. 

In Math first grade children have been working hard on their math facts, 2-digit addition as well as 3 digit addition.They have also (very excitedly) begun a unit on multiplication!!!!  Kindergarten children have also been working on math facts, number bonds, and addition equations. They have begun their unit on subtraction, (and yes....they are equally excited)!! Both grade levels have also enjoyed playing a card game where they race to find the sum, as well as illustrate their equations. 

Writing has continued daily. Upon entering the classroom the children continue  find their journal and look for their writing prompt at their table. Children are asked to (do their best to) read the prompt and work independently, illustrate and date their entry.

Thursday -  Write about a time when you were upset about something that happened at school. What happened? What did you do?

Monday- What is something special you do with your grandparents? How does it make you feel?

Tuesday - who is your best friend? What do you like about him or her? What do you like to do together?

Wednesday - what do you think 2nd grade is going to be like?

Thursday - Tell me about a time when you were very brave?

For Open Circle I explained that we were going to continue to use and implement the skills they have learned throughout the program. If Open Circle sessions are necessary to discuss a problem or issue we will certainly have them, however, we have completed the 2 year spiral program!!! At the end of the year we will revisit the Open Circle and share what our classroom/home experiences have been since learning the program's skills. Each child has been provided with a Coping Strategy List in order to help them at home. Please help your child refer to this list when needed. 

Spelling this week's spelling quiz focused on sight words the children had been previously quizzed on. I am so proud to say that everyone did VERY well! There were challenging words that they have clearly learned and retained!!!!! February sight words will be reassessed shortly and new words will be provided! 

Sight Word  assessments have been given and the words for March have been sent home! The knowledge the kindergarten children are gaining is amazing and I am so proud of them!

The highlight of our short week last week was our mini-Torah project for Parshat Mishpatim. God gave the laws to the Jewish people, who accepted them without hesitation. This week's parshah is Terumah. In it, God gives Moses the plans for building the Mishkan, a beautiful and portable place to pray during the years in the desert. The Jewish people contribute many gifts to the building of the Mishkan.

Our Kindergartenis learning the letters pay and fay this week. Remember: “Pay 

you PUT the dot,” and “Fay – you FORGET the dot.”

We started the week off learning the song “Mi SheNichnas Adar.” This song says that the first day of Adar is the beginning of a joyful month. We welcomed the entire school to the Rosh Hodesh Adar service on Tuesday morning by singing “Mi sheNichnas” as they all arrived at the chapel for tefillah. We have begun learning all about the Purimstory, Purim vocabulary, Purim traditions and mitzvot, as well as Purim songs. “Laytzan Katan Sheli” (my little clown) is a favorite! We also reviewed our body parts vocabulary with a little clown project.
