This Week in 5 and 6, Feb. 4

We are now studying France and the Benelux countries in geography–Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Today and tomorrow I am sharing photos of my 2019 trip to these wonderful countries and telling stories of my travels related to the pictures I took. Part of my goal in teaching geography this year is to encourage my students to travel to countries around the world to see them for themselves.

We have started our new novel, Red Kayak. Our first discussion focused on truth-telling which is a major theme of the book. This is one of the first times teaching literature that I have spent so much time on the quote before the beginning of the book.

In social justice, we are part of a multi-school alliance. This week we have all finished The Lions of Little Rock and are now moving onto a shared history curriculum. We have been studying slavery through the eyes of Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman. We have synchronous learning every Tuesday. Our students gave presentations to each other about these subjects and others, like the Underground Railroad.

We have been discussing Terumah, this week’s Torah reading and also the biblical word for a contribution. The question we asked was ”How and what can I contribute?”

The students continued to work on their Doodle for Google designs in art class.
