The Keshet Experience – week 37

A shorter week than normal, but certainly not a boring one! We began Tuesday with some CRAZY hair (one of Morah Beth’s specialties) and a visit from Talya and Rotem. Wednesday brought in a bunch of cute, fuzzy little animals. Thursday was a Crazy Mis Match Day AND our Field Trip to see the Cat in The Hat. You can imagine the looks we got :). Morah Beth and Morah Miriam also celebrated Red Nose Day (to help fight against childhood poverty). We ended the week with Disney/Superhero Day AND we got to celebrate this day with our Grandparents and Special Friends! It was most definitely a fun-filled week. 

Open Circle: Our program continues (and will throughout the rest of the year) with proper communication, problem solving skills, “bucket filling” Please encourage your children to use their “I feel” sentence, traffic light symbol, and bucket filling compliments at home as often as possible. 

Secular Studies:
Math Centers:
Things 1 have REALLY been learning to tell time. Not only can they tell time to the hour and the half hour, but they are learning to count around the clock by 5’s! I must say I am really impressed with their understanding of this concept!
Things 2 began a unit on comparing large numbers, using the “greater than”, “less than”, and “equal to” symbols. They also began addition within 100. Using the make a 10 strategy they are coming along quite nicely with a complex skill. 
Social Studies:
Our Amazing Art unit has continued with two more incredible artists. The children learned about the styles of Pablo Picasso, and Wassily Kandinsky. After learning about each artiste children observed images of their artwork and created their own masterpieces in their style. 
Spelling/Sight Words:
Things 1 have been learning about question words, how, what, and why. Children should continue to practice reading their list of sight words. 
Things 2 have been given their last list of new words….and it is a tough one!!! This week we are learning about homophones! A challenge but always a fun unit!
Writing/Reading Groups and Language Arts: 
Reading groups were once again quite productive. Four groups of children worked together on reading a-loud, completing the skills assignments, and re-reading independently. Skills this week covered, Authors Purpose, Sequential Order, KWL Chart, and working together to create a new story. Ask your child which one(s) they completed this week. 
Children have also been working on completing their Opinion books. Using the OREO method children worked hard to back up their opinions. 
We are continuing to develop knowledge of nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, and compound words.
Judaic/Hebrew :
For parshat Naso, we learned and practiced the Kohanic Blessing this week.  The children each designed a personal blessing for one of their classmates in words and pictures, and each child had a turn to  deliver it to their partner, using the special Kohanic Blessing hand configuration (hint: think Spock).  We learned and practiced the 3-letter roots for 3 of the important words in this frequently recited blessing (aka every Friday evening, in the Amida, on Festivals, etc.) — the words for bless, guard, and educate.   We sang along to 2 different melodies: Julie Silver and Gad Elbaz. 
Our learning centers included: Blessing puzzles, Parsha Art, Hebrew Word Dominoes, and Summer Books Quiet Reading. 
We reviewed the concepts of “respecting the Torah” and learned lessons for our field trip to the play — how to be a respectful audience.  
We prepared for Special Persons Day by reviewing our Whole School Kabbalat Shabbat material.
